Videos, Quizzes and Songs for all Levels!!

Eslvideo.com

About it:

  • A very comprehensive site with lots of videos for all levels!
  • It is designed to meet teachers need of videos and allows them to produce quizzes or to make use of already designed quizzes.
  • Videos of different themes and categories are available.
  • Songs are also available to make your lessons fun and interesting!
  • You just have to select a video and prepare follow-up questions or activities.
  • Teachers can also upload their own videos.

Significance:

  • I believe that what is most significant about eslvideo.com is that it allows collaboration on all levels, whether it is collaboration between teacher - students or students -students or students - gadget.
  • It promotes autonomy where students get the chance on the first level to improve their listening skills by viewing the videos on their own.
  • Secondly, students get the chance to create their own quizzes and share them with their classmates.
  • Students in such activities have the opportunity to practice their grammar, writing skills and speaking skills.
  • Furthermore, authenticity is the greatest asset of videos.
  • Videos are very relevant and up-to-date.
  • Videos aid in retention and comprehension therefore, even if students work autonomously they will benefit.
  • In addition, videos raise cultural awareness and allow students from home or class to learn about many different cultures and this can lead to the idea of comparing, contrasting and reflecting on other cultures.
  • Motivation would definitely emerge as students select what themes/topics they are interested in and prepare their own quizzes.

Suggestion:

In Classroom:

  •  Many activities could be carried out in class using eslvideo.com.
  • Teachers could prepare videos and quizzes that suit the theme of the lesson and ask students to get into groups  and work together.
  • Another activity would be put students in groups and ask them to summarize and prepare a report about the video they watched to their classmates.
  • Teachers could also provide students with videos that have no audios, ask students to create a story or a dialogue and present it in front of the class.
  • An activity that i really found fun is to pass out videos to groups of students and ask to prepare a news report about the information presented in the video.
  • Students would give each other specific roles, for example, one would be responsible of the headlines, another would be the reporter etc.
  • Later students would have to video tape their news report and present it to their class.
  • Additionally, videos could be great topic-openers/introducers to an upcoming theme.
  • Debates are also fun, where students are divided into two groups and are asked to watch a video/videos about opposing beliefs towards a certain issue. Later, students would have to note down the weak and strong points and prepare for a debate where they would have to defend their case and most of all have a final shared opinion.

Outside Classroom:

  • Students outside class can make use of eslvideo.com by veiwing video clips that interest them.
  • A great site that allows the development of speaking, listening and comprehension skills.
  • Viewing videos at home and preparing quizzes would improve students written language and allow students to collaborate with one another and quiz each other by exchanges videos+ quizzes.
  • Students could also video tape their own videos according to a theme/topic discussed in class.
  •  Teachers could also assign students to create videos as part of a project, where they could work in groups in their own time and prepare a group video.

Shortcomings:

  • I can't really anticipate any limitations in using eslvideo.com.
  • I only believe that teachers should remember to use suitable videos that would match the students level and theme covered up in class.
  • With beginners, shorter videos would be more beneficial since low level students get bored and feel demotivated quiet quickly.
