Learn English...Enjoy Music!!!

http://eslvideo.com

About it:
  • A site that i have referred to before, but i would like to talk about the great amount of song material that can be used through this site.
  • Using the search engine teachers and students could search for songs that interest them or ones that they simply like!!
  • I tried searching for general topics, for example, "funny songs" and found loads.
  • What's soo pleasing about the songs is that there is an exercise (fill in the blanks) with every song and a transcript.
  • You can select songs for different levels (beginners, low intermediate, intermediate and high intermediate).

Significance:

  • A great autonomous activity, students who enjoy music can definitely improve their English by selecting the songs they like, listen and follow up with the lyrics.
  • An activity of filling in blanks with missing words would improve students comprehension, retention and listening skills.
  • Songs in my opinion do improve students language fluency since authentic material would be a great motive for students to improve their language.
  • In addition, i believe learning English language with songs allows learning to become "Art".
  • Students with songs can become more artistic and creative.
  • Students not only improve their language skills and not only have fun but also learn about other cultures.

Suggestions:

In Classroom:

  • Teachers could relate the theme of the lesson to a song and have students listen to it and retell what was being said.
  • Students could also work in groups and try to re write a similar song to the one they heard by changing a couple of words, this would be their version!!
  • Teachers could also ask students to prepare at home a song and recite it in front of the class as a fun activity....this might help shy students get more involved in class activities.

Outside Classroom:

  • Songs are great fun and students of all levels enjoy them.
  • Most of you for sure have noticed that your students enjoy leaning languages through songs.
  • Students through eslvideo.com could share their favorite songs with their friends by email, facebook etc.
  • This would allow students to motivate one another.

Shortcomings:

  • I thought that the only shortcoming in using eslvideo.com is the absense of a variety of  follow up activities.
  • Filling the blanks is a good activity, but others also could be helpful and fun, such as matching, multiple choice questions etc.
