DVOLVER...Movie Maker!!

Dvolver.com

About it:
  • A fun, entertaining site that allows you to create movies using available layouts to create scenes.
  • You have to decide on the setting of your movie, so you have to select a background and sky!
  • Next you would have to select the type of plot that you are intending to apply in your movie, for example, a rendez- vous a chase a pickup or a soliloquoy.
  • Then you would have to decide on the characters that you need for your movie.
  • Finally, you could start inserting the dialogue that you want the characters to deliver.
  • You can also select background music.
  • You can have 3 scenes in each movie and a total of 3(100 words/line) for each character.
  • You can email it to a friend/student etc. You would also have to type in your email so a copy of the movie is sent to your email.
Significance:
  • Since it is easy to use and allows students to take the lead in creating a movie or any kind of story board, then i believe it could really motivate and give rein to students creativity and innovation.
  • If students are to work in groups then an activity like this would definitely allow peer collaboration, negotiation, decision making (Constructivism) and would allow students to develop their speaking, writing and listening skills.
  • Also, such group activities which tend to be fun and engaging allow the initiation of a sense of class community.
  • If such an activity was to be done at home then it would encourage autonomy and reflective thinking (Constructivism) . It would also allow students to develop their creativity and to review what they have previously learned.
  • "Rote Learning" (Behaviorism) can also be assisted by using Dvolver movies. Teachers could provide students with dialogues and students would repeat them many times and can be given the opportunity to add any other sentences/words.
  • It suits most levels and ages. Teachers could use it as a tool to present stories to young learners. It would be really fun and entertaining to teenagers and adults.
Suggestions:

In Classroom:
  • The teacher could ask the students to work in pairs or groups and  review a topic they discussed in a previous lesson by creating a small movie. It's great when students have been engaged in dialogues and role-taking tasks!
  • For advanced students and after discussing a topic in class the teacher could them to work in groups and create a story that relates to the topic they discussed.
  • I also think that with beginners it might be difficult to ask them to create a story/dialogue. Therefore, teachers could make use of dvolver by creating a story, dialogue or even retelling a short story that they have read in class by changing the setting, characters etc. It would be fun and interesting for students to follow along.
  • A nice activity that would concentrate on specific vocabulary would be to ask students to create an ad, story, dialogue or even a poem by using specific words that the teacher chooses for the students. The vocabulary words could be linked to previous lessons.
  • A challenging activity would be that the teacher would prepare short stories, dialogues etc. and have students view the videos and try to summarize e.g. a moral lesson being suggested.
Outside Classroom:
  • Students could be asked to write a dialogue, poem etc. and send it to the teacher via email.
  • Random topics could be suggested by the teacher such as,"talk about your most embarrassing moment". Students can create a soliloquy a role play etc. to tell their story and to have fun at the same time by choosing the suitable background music etc.
Shortcomings:
  • The settings and plot types are limited.
  • Number of role parts are also limited to 3 parts/character in a scene.
  • If advanced students wanted to prepare a long story they have only 3 scenes which is quite little.
  • If over used i guess it might become boring since there isn't much variety with the plots, settings and characters.
