Eyejot..."Video Mail in a Blink"!!

Eyejot.com

About it:
  • A tool that allows students and teacher to create and receive video messages.
  • You would just have to create an account, there are free accounts, pro and pro plus.
  • You can record videos  of up to 5 minutes when using a free account.
 Significance:
  • Very easy tool to use.
  • Promotes listening and speaking skills, thus...fluency!
  • Encourages shy students to use eyejot at home, where they might feel more comfortable!
  • Motivates students to express themselves, instead of having to write.
  • Teachers could use eyejot as a tool for assessment and record keeping.
  • Teachers with all the hectic teaching hours don't have much time to provide weak students with comments and suggestion, Eyejot would work great with teachers when are short in time and need to follow-up with their students work, effort, etc.
  • It's also great becasue it could be used with students of all levels.
  • The material provided by eyejot is authentic language in use.
  • Eyejot could be used by students outside the classroom at any time they want..this aids in students autonomy.
  • Students could communicate withone another by sending messages and thus, collaborating. Students that aren't very close to each other can work on a group project outside the classroom by discussing, sharing ideas using eyejot.
  • Teachers could also collaborate with their students outside the classroom using eyejot (connected classroom)!
  • A great tool for virtual classes.
Suggestions:

Inside Classroom:
  • Eyejot could be used in class among students. They can video tape themselves answering a question, telling a story, interviewing each other etc. Their partner would have to listen and summarize what they have said.
  • Teachers could also use eyejot by asking students to prepare short video recording individually, in pairs or groups.
  • Teachers could record their own videos related to one theme. Pass out different recordings maybe of opposing ideas, ask students to adopt the ideas found in the videos and prepare to defend the ideas in a debate.
Outside Classroom:
  • Mainly could be used to correct homework, provide students with feedback, comments assessment etc.
  • Student could be asked to make a video talking about a certain topic instead of writing what they plan to say! However, if the teacher is worried about their writing skills students can be asked to write a paragraph for example and submit a video also practicing their speaking skills.
  • Students could create videos and send them to one another in order to practice their language.
  • Any type of show-and -tell activities, interviews etc. could be done using eyejot by students at home.
  • Virtual lessons could become even more virtual! Using eyejot to provide students with video assessment, comments, suggestions, activities, instruction etc.
Shortcomings:
  • I'm just worried that sometimes when a tool is so great and easy to use, teachers and students might tend to overuse it. Thus, writing might be somehow neglected.
  • If you decide to create a free account, you can only record for 5 minutes, which isn't quite a lot for teachers when providing assessment. Also, students with a good level of the language might find 5 minutes too short.
