A Space for Many!

Wallwisher.com
About it:
  • You can create a "bulletin board" which students/teachers can access and add comments to the wall.
  • You don't have to register or to create an account, but if you want you can!
  • After registering you can start building a wall.
  • You would have to choose a title for your boards and certain options are available such as who can view the board, who can post sticks on the board and you can either approve or disapprove posts before adding them to the board.
  • In each stick you can have a maximum of 160 characters.
  • You can also upload videos and pictures, but only from the web and the videos are to be specifically uploaded from youtube.com.
  • To join and post on any board you should log in.
Significance:
  • Great tool for students to express their thoughts, ideas towards a topic the teacher would raise.
  • Great for project work! The teacher could start a project by asking students to brainstorm ideas that they think are convinced of and at the same time it promotes collaboration among students and teacher.
  • If Wallwisher was to be used at home, it would definitely promote autonomy and reflective thinking. This would depend on the task that the teacher has assigned.
  • Wallwisher could be used with students of all levels.
  • Wallwisher promotes reading, writing and speaking.
  • Wallwisher also promotes "Connected Classrooms", where students can collaborate, communicate and connect with their peers and teachers when they are outside the classroom.
  • It definitely motivates students, especially the shy ones to express themselves when at home.
  • A great tool that allows retention, because it can store information, notes, ideas etc.in which students could return to later.
Suggestions:

Inside Classroom:

  • Students with a good level of the target language, Wallwisher could be used as a warm up tool. Teachers would ask students a question, allow the students to meditate and note down their ideas on a Wallwisher board. The teacher could follow what the students are noting down and this would help the teacher to understand what the students actually know, have in mind etc.
  • A nice activity would be to ask students to get into groups, the teacher would start of with any random sentence. Students would have to complete the sentence and move on to create a short story etc.
  • Teachers get the chance to constantly monitor brainstorming activities and form ideas and thoughts of the students level of thinking. For example, the teacher asks the students to think for a while about a topic for a project. Students are asked to note down their ideas and thoughts on Wallwisher. Students in this case are asked to participate without feeling hesitant or anxious. At the same time the teacher forms future ideas for the project.
Outside Classroom:
  • Its a great tool that promotes reflective thinking for both teachers and students. The teacher could continue a class discussion, debates if he/she runs out of time. Students outside classroom can participate in the discussion.
  • Teachers could prepare for future lessons by using Wallwisher to get ideas, interests etc. from the students. Teachers in this case are closer to their students and to their needs.
  • Teachers could use Wallwisher to note down thoughts, ideas about a particular lesson, topic, theme. Teachers could go back to the board later on and reflect, add or remove ideas.
  • Could be used among students, instead of having to meet, students could share ideas, thoughts, work on projects etc. using Wallwisher.
  • Virtual classrooms become so exciting and interactive if Wallwisher was used.
Shortcomings:
  • It clutters when notes are posted. However, they can be arranged in any way suitable.
  • Photos cannot be uploaded from personal computers, only from the web and videos only from youtube.
  • Not really sure if it will work with beginners. But, definitely a great tool for intermediate and advanced levels of students.
